Canada's Forgotten Believers

Sadaqa jariya starts with a single book

They asked. We are ready. We just need the means to answer. ‍ ‍

In early 2025, Tayba sent over 200 courses to chaplains at Canadian facilities; it was a pilot program to test the Tayba model north of the border. Since then, word has spread. More students are asking for the courses, and the list of potential students has grown to over 700.

For over 20 years, Tayba has provided courses to incarcerated students across the US, people we call the Forgotten Believers. Now, together, we have the chance to continue bringing that lifeline to Muslims in Canada.

“Muslims make up roughly 20% of the inmate population in provincial jails in Ontario. Time spent in incarceration is the perfect time for individuals to pause, take a deep breath and reflect on their purpose in life and their relationship with Allah. Unfortunately, Muslim inmates don’t always have access to a Muslim chaplain or to Islamic literature. This is something that is slowly changing. Muslim inmates are in dire need of a program like the one offered by Tayba Foundation so that they can connect with their Deen and work on improving themselves during their time in incarceration. I encourage the community to support this initiative and support our forgotten believers.”

Each student who enrolls receives the first book in our 99-level course, Islam 98. It is a first step into the fundamentals of Islam, built for someone starting exactly where they are, at no cost to them or the facility. Upon completion, they continue through the rest of the Tayba curriculum.
